WHY I DO WHAT I DO |
The importance of Literacy is vital to a functional society. It teaches us how to not only read a given statement, but how to interpret the effect of the statement at its core in determining if it is helpful or harmful to a world in need of independent thinkers. The Literature that we discuss in the classroom setting are the words written by those whose voices helped to shape societies in America and the world over. They are ordinary people who did and said extraordinary things and by studying their work, we become more closely connected to who we are as a culture and what we will and will not tolerate as a diverse and vibrant learning community. What we use in the classroom today is the foundation of the important contributions that these students will make in the future, going on to study and work in a multitude of fields and subject matters that will require critical thinking skills, sound understanding of language from its earliest to its most modern forms, as well as a sensitive and serious understanding of the value of words. My work has dealt with several scopes of Literature from Critical Philosophy, Renaissance and Medieval British Literature, Dramatic Literature, and Irish History and Literature. Working with older texts helps those of us who live today to understand the world of the past and to know where we have been and guide us on to what we are progressing towards. It is precisely these materials whose importance I stress is vital and valuable to the classroom and to our cultural understandings. I encourage this in my students because I know that they are competent and confident individuals and what they learn from me and my colleagues is proportioned in equal measure to what we learn from them. They remind us every day of why we became teachers; not to simply parrot the lessons of the past, but for all of us to learn from one another and move forward together. Welcome to my classroom!
